Varun`s detention under NSA unfortunate

Veteran Congress leader and Union Minister Arjun Singh today described as "unfortunate" the detention of BJP candidate Varun Gandhi under the National Security Act (NSA) following his hate remarks against Muslims during campaign.

He, however, said Varun`s inflammatory remarks were also unfortunate.

Talking to mediapersons, Mr Singh initially refused to react to a question on the correctness of the detention of Varun under the NSA. But when the question was repeatedly put to him, he said the detention was unfortunate.

A member of the Nehru-Gandhi family, 29-year-old Varun is fighting his maiden electoral battle from the Etah prison in Uttar Pradesh after the Mayawati government in the state detained him under the NSA.

He is the BJP candidate from Pilibhit, a constituency which elected his mother Maneka Gandhi on BJP ticket in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections.
